The origin of "to flip a coin" tradition
The fountain most famous of Italy and of Rome has many legends and ancient rituals around it.The first one is to flip a coin into the water of fountain to come back in Rome, and this gesture is repeating every day for thousand times. The origin of this tradition is maybe a use of ancient romans, in fact they used to flip coins into fountains, rivers and lakes to give thanks to divinities and be protected in their trips. But a famous researcher discover a document of 1900 that talk about the origin of this tradition: an german archaeologist Helbig invented this ritual for his friends that were in Rome for Grand Tour, a kind of modern erasmus, to give a hope to return to visit the wonderful places in Rome.Helbig was very popular in Rome in 1900 and this ritual became a trendy use.
