The idea of an art gallery, in the modern sense of the term, meaning an exhibition open to the public, was only born in 1817 after the fall of Napoleon and the consequent return to the Church State of a large part of the works belonging to it, as it was arranged in the Congress of Vienna.

The Vatican Pinacoteca was built in a place though to be suitable for ensuring the best lighting conditions, for both the correct preservation of the works and their optimal aesthetic enhancement. Before its constructions, the paintings were constantly moved around the Apostolic Palaces due to the lack of a proper setting. Today, they are arranged in eighteen rooms according to chronology and school, from the Primitives (XII XIII century) to the XIX century. The collection includes a number of masterpieces of the greatest Italian painters, such as Giotto, Beato Angelico, Melozzo da Forlì, Perugino, Raphael, Leonardo, Tiziano, Veronese, Caravaggio and Crespi.
