The four rooms known as the Stanze of Raphael within the Vatican Museums, are situated on the second floor of the Palace were Pope Julius II and his successors lived. The pictorial decoration of the stanze was executed by Raphael and his school between 1508 and 1524 and is one of the greatest works of art of the entire complex.

Julius II commissioned Raphael to redecorate the existing interiors of the rooms. Running from east to west (though this is not the chronological order in which the rooms were frescoed) you will find the Sala di Costantino, the Stanza di Eliodoro, the Stanza della Segnatura and the Stanza dell'incendio del Borgo. After the death of Raphael in 1520, his assistants Gianfrancesco Penni, Giulio Penni, Giulo Romano and Raffaellino del Colle carried out the project. The Stanze di Raffaello are the grand fresco that mark the High Renaissance in Rome.
