In 1629 Pope Urban VIII commissioned Gianlorenzo Bernini to create the fountain, deciding as its location the Poli Palace. In the eighteenth century Pope Clement XII decided to restore the Trevi Fountain and began work on the fountain we know today.In 1732, Niccolò Salvi was in charge of the project. Salvi consulted Bernini’s original plans but also added his own ideas to the statuary, structure, and design. The resulting fountain, one the finest in Rome, is the Baroque masterpiece that completely dominates the little square today and attracts so many visitors every year.
