Roma Termini is the main railway station of the city and the largest in Italy. It was named after the Baths of Diocletian, in Latin called thermae. Renovated on the occasion of the Jubilee, in 2000, the Termini station is an important landmark of the city, thanks to the many services provided and the shopping centre Forum Termini that includes several shops of any kind. Termini is also the main hub for public transport, since both Metro A and B intersect at Termini and there is a major bus station in the square located just opposite Termini station.

At Termini Station, and in the area surrounding it, you will enjoy a cosmopolitan atmosphere. From Termini you may easily reach Piazza della Repubblica, with its beautiful and controversial fountain, the multi-ethnic Piazza Vittorio, the majestic Santa Maria Maggiore or the suggestive Rione Monti, with its little streets and original boutiques.

DON’T MISS

Piazza della Repubblica (or Piazza Esedra)

National Museum of Rome

Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs (Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli)

DID YOU KNOW...?

Piazza della Repubblica (or Piazza Esedra): It was designed after the Unification of Italy, following the perimeter of the ancient Baths of Diocletian. The square occupies the place where once stood the caldarium (hot plunge bath) of the Baths of Diocletian. At the centre of the square is Mario Rutelli’s Fountain of the Naiads, that, at the time of its construction, caused a sensation because of its decorative naked female figures. In fact, they look curvy and teasing, and they seem to gambol in the water of the fountain flowing on their bodies, creating a very provocative effect. Today we would say that they are terribly sexy!

National Museum of Rome: From Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Palazzo Massimo alle Terme: The Museum keeps many great classical artworks. We recommend you not to miss the marble friezes depicting the origins of Rome, that once were part of the Basilica Aemilia of the Roman Forum. On the second floor don’t miss the wonderful frescoes of the Augustan Age, founded nearby Villa Farnesina. They have different themes: from religious to erotic, theatrical and pastoral, according to the room they originally decorated.

Set-piece of the museum is the reconstruction of the summer triclinium of the Villa of Livia, a formal dining room and living room. You will have the feeling of being in a real ancient room, surrounded by beautiful frescoes representing an enchanting garden full of blossom trees. Experts of botany will distinguish myrtles, laurels, oleanders, pines, cypresses and oaks. There are also several mosaics, carved marbles, and a wide collection of ancient and medieval coins kept in the vault.

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs (Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli) encloses the space once occupied by the tepidarium (warm bath) of the ancient Baths of Diocletian. The church was conceived by Michelangelo, but subsequently altered by Vanvitelli, who applied important changes to the original project. Not to be missed the double meridian line drawn on the floor of the transept, which indicates the high noon. In fact, at 12 o’clock a ray of sun gets through a hole on the ceiling above the right aisle, and illuminates the Church. Until 1846 this meridian line was used to set the clocks in Rome.
