Saint Peter's basilica is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions and for being associated with the papacy. It is also a symbol of both the Counter-reformation and many Renaissance artists, such as Michelangelo, Bernini, Maderno.

Within the Basilica there are over 100 tombs, including 91 popes, Emperor Otto II, some Catholic British royalty. It is also home to an incredible amount of artistic treasures, the most important of which is Michelangelo's Pietà. A masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, it was commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Billheres as his funeral monument. The Pietà has a pyramidal structure, depicting the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary, at the vertex of the sculpture, after Crucifixion. Mary's body is almost totally covered by her drapery, while you can see the naked body of Jesus and the marks of Crucifixion in his left side. Michelangelo's work was not the first regarding this theme, but his interpretation was far different from the previous ones, as he sculpted a young and beautiful Mary rather than an older woman 50 years old.
