At the centre of Saint Peter's square rises an Egyptian obelisk of red granite, originally erected in Heliopolis by a pharaoh of the Fifth dynasty of Egypt, and then transferred to Alexandria by Emperor Augustus. It was only with Caligula that the obelisk was moved to Rome, first at the centre of the Circus, and in 1586 in the middle of Saint Peter's square.

The Egyptian obelisk is 25.5 metres tall, supported on bronze lions and surmounted by the Chigi arms in bronze, in all 41 meters to the cross on its top. Engineer-architect Domenico Fontana under the direction of Pope Sixtus V, was in charge of re-erecting the Obelisk, and this took him thirteen months. Fontana also removed the ancient metal ball that stood atop the obelisk, and placed it in a Rome museum. Though Bernini had no influence in the erection of the monument, he did use it as the centerpiece of his magnificent square.
