On the right hand side of the Porta del Popolo stands Santa Maria del Popolo. It originally consisted of a small chapel built by Pope Paschal II in 1099. The chapel was enlarged by Pope Gregory IX in 1227, after he had the painting of Santa Maria del Popolo transferred there from the chapel of Santissimo Salvatore in Laterano. The painting is still in the church nowadays. Several changes resulted in the current baroque style highlighted by the restoration works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Important works of art are to be found in the Church, like in the Cerasi Chapel, one of the most important chapels of the Basilica, containing two canvases of Caravaggio, (Crucifixion of St. Peter and Conversion on the Way to Damascus), and an Assumption of the Virgin by Annibale Carracci.
