The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned by Pope Innocent X during the artist’s most fruitful period. It is located in the centre of the square and consists of a big elliptical basin surmounted by a group of marble statues and an Egyptian obelisk dating back to Ancient Rome and found in the Circus of Maxentius 1647. The marble statues represent the four major rivers of the world known at the time: Nile, Danube, Ganges, and Plate, each one lying in a different continent: Africa, Europe, Asia, America.
