The museum rises around the monument of the Ara Pacis Augustae, it has been unveiled in 2006 on the occasion of Rome’s foundation anniversary. The complex designed by Richard Meier was criticized for a long time because of it aesthetic impact on the historical city center. The Ara Pacis is along the Tiber next to the Mausoleum of Augustus nearby Via del Corso and Spanish Square.
The big case of white marble and glass has a double function: it protects the monument and it hosts the Museum with it many initiatives. Is understandable that the work caused an uproar, in fact the Ara Pacis museum holds the record for being the first architectural work built in the historic center of Rome, from the fall of fascism up to nowadays.
The Ara Pacis monument or Altar of peace, is composed of a Parian marble fence delicately sculpted with fine reliefs, it glorified the emperor and the Peace that he brought in the Roman rule. The central altar, where human sacrifices were conducted, can be reached by two openings located at the center of shorter sides of the fence and it is a higher position compared with the perimeter of the structure.
In ancient times the Ara Pacis was on the Via Flaminia, it was after replaced where it currently is.
